About the museum
The museum arose from an idea of Matilde Hernández Lorente, a scholar of Campana, who together with the Centro Studi Campaniani involved Italian and foreign painters and sculptors in donating a work inspired by the texts of the poet from Marradi. 57 works were collected, presented in a first exhibition in June 1998 and then in travelling shows, including the one at the Biblioteca Berio in Genoa in 2001.
The collection was enlarged with other works, including a painting by Francesco Galeotti and works from an exhibition set up in Scandicci in 1999, reaching 68 pieces. In 2014 the work of the winner of a graphic and painting competition for students, held for the centenary of the publication of the Canti Orfici, was added.
The museum opened in 2009 on the ground floor of the former elementary school of Marradi, now the Centro Culturale Dino Campana, which also houses the Centro Studi Campaniani “Enrico Consolini”. The display, originally in three rooms, has now been reduced to two to make space for the works of the Marradi painter Francesco Galeotti. The common thread is the colour red, which recurs in Campana’s verses. The entrance and the rooms also hold documents and panels on the letters between the poet and Sibilla Aleramo.
