About the museum
The Museo del Paesaggio Storico dell'Appennino is housed in the complex of the Badia di San Pietro a Moscheta, in the municipality of Firenzuola, within the Parco del Giogo-Casaglia. The abbey was founded in 1034 by Saint John Gualbert. In the eighteenth century the monastery was suppressed by grand-ducal decree and its property was sold, while the church served as a parish church until 1986.
The museum is part of the Mugello museum system and tells how people have shaped the Apennines over time. The route begins with the history of the abbey and the impact of the Vallombrosan monks on the territory. It then passes, through sensory experiences and historical settings, medieval woods, cultivated land, Renaissance villages and villa-farms, up to the most recent transformations.
The visit involves all five senses and ends outdoors, in the woods, with walks to discover the real landscape. Along the Sentiero dei Seccatoi (the path of the drying kilns) traces of the old chestnut-drying kilns can be seen. For families and children an activity book is included in the ticket, in Italian only; guided visits and educational workshops are organised on booking.
