About the museum

The Museo di arte sacra Giovanni da San Guglielmo is housed in the church of San Giovanni Battista in Montecassiano and forms part of the artistic heritage of the diocese of Macerata-Tolentino-Recanati-Cingoli-Treia. The church was built in the 16th century as the original nucleus of the convent of the Poor Clares; after numerous restorations its interior is in the Baroque style, with an octagonal plan, and on the high altar it holds a canvas by Girolamo Buratti showing the preaching of Saint John the Baptist.

The collection, also known as the Museo degli Arredi Sacri, brings together liturgical objects: reliquaries, chalices, crosses and works from goldsmiths' workshops in the Marche and Rome. It also includes processional structures, candelabra, crucifixes and recently restored cartegloria (processional glory frames), as well as silver pieces by the Macerata silversmiths Domenico and Antonio Piani, and two busts of Saint Cassian.

Among the oldest pieces is one of the oldest bells in the Marche, dated 1358, from the church of San Nicolò.
