About the museum
The MArC tells the story of Appignano through ceramics, linking the territory with the manual work connected to clay, fire and the memory of the community. The route begins in Roman times: at the archaeological site of Collina del Sole, on the southern edge of the village, investigated between 2015 and 2016, the remains of a probable villa rustica (Roman farm estate) with a brick kiln were found, dating from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD. On a tile fragment there is a Latin inscription that mentions a freedman, Appio, and the slave Cadmo, who were responsible for the kiln; for this reason it is assumed that the name Appignano may derive from the “fundus Appiani”.
The exhibition includes a map of the historic sites of cocce production, tools for working clay with infographics on drying and firing, a selection of cocce with an essential, traditional design, a synoptic panel on the society linked to manual labour, a potter’s wheel with the biographies of Appignano’s craftsmen, and a section devoted to modern decorative ceramics. The display is based on the book “Terra, Acqua, Fuoco, Anima” by Mario Buldorini and Roberto Bronzi. A virtual visit is also available.
