About the museum
The museum is set within the San Giacomo complex, in the centre of Lu, made up of the 17th-century church, the sacristy and the Casa della Reggenza. It was set up by the Associazione Culturale San Giacomo in collaboration with the Ufficio Beni Culturali of the Diocese of Casale Monferrato and the competent Superintendencies (heritage authorities), and opened to the public on 15 November 2008. The rooms were designed by the architect Dario Manzo and fitted out by the art historians Lorena Palmieri and Gian Luca Bovenzi.
The rooms hold over one hundred artefacts from the 15th to the 20th century, coming mostly from the churches of the town or from private donations. They were brought out of storerooms and unsafe spaces, catalogued, photographed and in part restored: goldsmiths' work, reliquaries, sacred vestments, wooden sculptures and valuable canvas paintings, including works by Stefano Maria Clemente, Orsola Maddalena Caccia, Giuseppe Antonio Torricelli, the workshop of Guglielmo Caccia known as Moncalvo, and Domenico Piola.
Among the works stands out “I Canonici di Lu” by Pietro Francesco Guala (1748), which returned to Lu in 2016 after more than half a century. An exhibition is dedicated to the Divisionist painter Luigi Onetti (1876–1968), born in Lu, whose works were donated to the museum by his heirs in 2013. The museum is part of the Sistema Museale della Diocesi di Casale, the Abbonamento Musei circuit and Monferrato Musei (MOMU).
