About the museum
The Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni was established by the Regional Council of Piedmont on 1 April 2003 and is part of the Rete Ecomusei del Piemonte. It tells the story of the life and landscape of the Monferrato Casalese, in particular the Pietra da Cantoni, a Miocene sandstone used for centuries as a building material and for carving out the infernot.
The seat is Palazzo Volta in Cella Monte, a building donated by the Curia of Casale at the start of the 2000s. The palazzo served as the parish house from the second half of the 17th century and, after recent restoration, has restored the loggia with columns of Pietra da Cantoni on the upper floors. The visit route combines the infernot at the seat, the historic building, the courtyard and the panoramic garden.
An infernot is a small underground chamber, carved into the stone without light or ventilation and usually reached from a cellar, where bottled wine was kept. The ecomuseum is run by the Fondazione Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni, of which numerous Monferrato municipalities are members, and it promotes knowledge of the infernot open in various villages, alongside publications, educational workshops and the Proverbiarium project. A bilingual touch panel (Italian and English) also lets visitors explore the other sites on the circuit virtually.
