About the museum
La Piccola Gerusalemme is the complex that tells the long history of Pitigliano's Jewish community and its coexistence with the town carved into the tufa. It extends along the streets of the former Jewish quarter, overlooking via Zuccarelli, and is run by the Associazione La Piccola Gerusalemme.
Its spiritual heart is the synagogue, built in 1598 in the centre of the former ghetto, with the Holy Ark (Aron ha-Kodesh), the tevà (reading platform) and Baroque decorations; high up is the space historically reserved for women. The Museo di cultura ebraica, founded at the wish of Elena Servi, brings together ritual objects, documents and photographs illustrating the daily life and festivals of the community.
An underground route carved entirely into the tufa leads to the underground rooms, each linked to specific religious rules: the matzah oven, where the unleavened bread for Pesach was made, the kosher slaughterhouse, the miqvè (ritual bath) and the kosher wine cellar. At the foot of the cliff is also the monumental Jewish cemetery, with more than 280 tufa headstones, which can be visited by arrangement. The museum also has a shop selling books, ritual objects and kosher products.
