Three paintings from a private collection, freshly restored and originating in Caravaggio's circle, show Mary Magdalene before, during and after her conversion, with her typical attributes such as a book, a cross, an ointment jar and a skull.
About the museum
The museum occupies the Palazzo Orsini, the fortified residence of the counts of Pitigliano, built in the 14th century and extended by Count Niccolò II Orsini. In the 16th century Niccolò IV intervened on the building again, and in 1793 the palace passed entirely to the bishop: today it houses the seat of the diocese, the bishop’s residence, the curia and the historical archive.
The diocesan museum opened in 1989 to safeguard works from the churches of the city and diocese that could no longer remain in their original locations. From 1998 new rooms were opened, including the cassero (the fortress keep) and the Sangallo loggetta, reaching today’s total of 21 rooms.
The route combines historic spaces with 15th-century frescoes and painted ceilings with sacred art and furnishings: antique furniture, jewellery, coins, wooden sculptures, paintings and textiles. The museum also includes the Cathedral of San Pietro in Sovana, which is Romanesque in style, and works linked to Francesco Zuccarelli, born in Pitigliano in 1702.
