About the museum
The museum is part of the Sistema museale di Ateneo (university museum system) of the University of Parma and is housed in the Department of Earth Sciences on the Parco Area delle Scienze campus. Its collections consist mainly of malacological specimens that document the paleoenvironmental and paleoecological history of western Emilia through mollusc faunas from the Neogene, about 23 million years ago, onwards.
Vertebrate remains from the same areas are also preserved, as well as specimens of different ages and origins, such as the Eocene fish of Bolca, the Jurassic fish of Solnhofen and the Paleozoic graptolites of Sardinia, used mainly for display.
Western Emilia is a key area for studying the climatic and geological evolution of the Mediterranean Basin, which is why the importance of some of the malacological collections goes beyond their local scientific value. The museum runs guided tours and educational activities.
