About the museum
The Antiquarium of Roccamena holds the finds from the excavations on Monte Maranfusa, where several settlements followed one another. The site was first occupied in the 9th–8th century BC; the peak of expansion came in the Archaic age, between the 7th and 6th century BC, and the centre was abandoned at the beginning of the 5th century BC. It was then reoccupied in the Arab-Norman period, between the 10th and 11th century AD.
For several years the materials from the excavation campaigns were kept by the Soprintendenza ai Beni culturali (heritage superintendency) of Palermo, awaiting a permanent arrangement in the municipality to which the site belongs. The museum was opened on 9 August 2004 at the initiative of the town council, in the presence of experts from the Soprintendenza and the local community.
The numerous finds make it possible to reconstruct the daily life and productive activities of the indigenous population who, while remaining attached to their traditions, received influences from the Greek colonial world: alongside local pottery, imported materials have in fact been found.
