About the museum
The castle of Chignolo Po began as a hilltop fortress controlling the Po; tradition dates its oldest tower to around 740. In 910 it passed to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of Santa Cristina. Between 1700 and 1730 it was transformed into an 18th-century royal palace, with stuccoes and frescoes by artists of the Tiepolo school in the state rooms; for this reason it is called the Versailles of Lombardy.
The visit takes place only with a guide, along two routes. The Baroque route includes the aviary theatre (teatro delle uccelliere), the Baroque façade, the monumental staircase (scalea), the court of honour, the great hall with the fresco of the four seasons, the gallery with stuccoes and frescoes, the library, the ceramics room, the bedroom and the dining room. The Medieval route leads into the dry moat, the basements with the cellars, the Leonardesque wine press and the wine vault (caveau), the kitchens, the secret staircase, the battlement walkways, the prisons, the armouries and the guards’ refectories.
