About the museum
The museum is based at Pian Osteria, in the heart of the Cansiglio forest, in the former elementary school buildings of the forest, which remained in use until the 1960s. It was inaugurated on 18 August 1984 and is owned by Veneto Agricoltura, the regional body that manages the forest heritage of the plateau.
The route unfolds over two floors and follows a chronological order: from the nomadic hunters of prehistory, also documented by the plant remains of the Palughetto, considered among the oldest conifers in Europe, to the long period of Venetian rule, when the forest supplied timber for the fleet of the Serenissima. The history of the forest is covered by panels and display cases on forest management, charcoal production and livestock farming.
An important part concerns the Cimbri, a minority of Asiago Plateau origin who settled on the plateau. Tools and photographs document woodworking and craftsmanship, while a library with videos explores the culture of the Cansiglio and the Cimbrian culture.
