About the museum
The history of the museums of Belluno begins in 1876, with the public opening of the Civica raccolta (civic collection) in the Palazzo dei Giuristi. It arose from the donation in 1872 of the painting collection of the physician Antonio Giampiccoli, to which the collections of bronzes, medals, plaquettes and manuscripts of Count Florio Miari were soon added. It is one of the oldest civic collections in the Veneto. Over time the collections have grown through bequests and purchases, such as the three canvases by Sebastiano Ricci from the Camerino d’Ercole of Palazzo Fulcis, bought in 1979, the Belluno folk jewellery (1983) and the Zambelli porcelain collection (1994).
The historical and artistic collections are today housed in Palazzo Fulcis, in Via Roma, the most important 18th-century building in Belluno. After a conservation restoration begun in 2012 and financed by the Fondazione Cariverona, the palace offers about 3,000 square metres of exhibition space on five levels, with recovered 18th-century stucco and frescoes and a large salon with a frescoed gallery, painted in 1776 by Costantino Cedini. The themed rooms occupy the basement, the first floor and the second floor. The third floor hosts temporary exhibitions and the three canvases of the Camerino d’Ercole by Sebastiano Ricci, while the lapidarium is displayed in the courtyard.
The route presents works by Bartolomeo Montagna, Domenico Tintoretto, Matteo Cesa, Andrea Brustolon, Marco and Sebastiano Ricci and Ippolito Caffi, together with porcelain, small bronzes and Renaissance plaquettes, drawings, engravings and other collections. The archaeological collection remains in the Palazzo dei Giuristi, which is currently closed to the public.
