About the museum
The museum was founded in the 1970s to show young people how their grandparents lived. The objects on display were donated by residents of Novalesa, and each one carries a label with its name in the local Franco-Provençal dialect and an Italian translation.
It is located in Via Maestra, in the centre of the village, in a 17th-century building that once housed the primary school. There are five rooms. On the ground floor one room gathers tools linked to work in the fields, transport, haymaking, grain, woodcutting and woodworking, and grape harvesting and winemaking.
On the first floor the kitchen with its large fireplace, the bedroom with festive men’s and women’s costumes, and a room for processing milk, wool and hemp have been reconstructed. Another room is set up as a classroom from earlier times and is also used for school visits and to tell the story of the valley. Among the finds are materials linked to the rock engravings in the area.
