About the museum

The Museo civico archeologico del Pulo is housed in the Casina Cappelluti, a 19th-century country residence near the karst doline of the Pulo di Molfetta. The museum was opened to the public in November 2012 and documents the archaeological finds from the doline and the surrounding area, the result of excavation campaigns carried out since 1997, including those at the Neolithic village of Fondo Azzollini.

The introductory route explains the geology of the area, the history of research, the Neolithic settlements, the Bronze Age, the presence of the Capuchin friars and the 18th-century saltpetre works (nitriere), with an explanation of how saltpetre was extracted. The collection presents a selection of pottery, stone tools and fragments of huts from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, accompanied by captions, images and reconstructions, as well as 18th-century ceramic containers from local workshops linked to saltpetre production.

The most valuable finds from the Pulo are partly kept in the Museo diocesano di Molfetta; the civic museum focuses above all on documenting and telling the story of the site, and complements the visit to the doline, a protected natural reserve.
