About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Acerra is housed in the Corpus Domini complex on Piazza Duomo, that is, in the building of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament. The lay brotherhood was founded in 1542 in the climate of the Catholic Reform and combined eucharistic devotion, liturgical service and works of charity. The building was erected in several phases: the church in 1587, the crypt in 1664, the sacristy and the oratory in 1684; the rooms on the upper floor are much more recent.
In the years after the earthquake of 1980 the church was stripped of many works of art that had been gathered through popular devotion. The museum, run by the diocese, seeks to recover that memory, document the local religious experience and offer, through the language of art, a reflection on the mystery of faith.
The route is arranged in three thematic areas. In the church, the places of popular devotion are recreated, with statues of Saint Roch and Saint Lazarus and testimonies from the confraternities of the diocese. In the former sacristy, silverware bearing the episcopal coat of arms, vestments, marbles and documents commemorating the bishops of Acerra are displayed. The former oratory houses a showcase of liturgical textiles, panels and canvases, and temporary exhibitions; on the upper floor is a library for educational activities with small groups.
