About the museum
The Museo sansossiano di arte sacra is located in the medieval crypt of the basilica of San Sossio Levita e Martire in Frattamaggiore, the city's mother church. The saint, a deacon of Miseno, died in 305 during the persecutions of Diocletian and is the patron saint of the city. The basilica holds the remains of Saints Severinus and Sossius, transferred in 1807 from the Benedictine monastery in Naples dedicated to them. For this reason the basilica and the museum are destinations for pilgrimages.
Founded in 1996, the museum collects fine marbles, parts of altars, sacred vestments, inscribed stones (lapidari), reliquaries, finds and other objects linked to the religious life of the city and to the ancient architecture of the church, tracing a history of the church and of the whole community. It has been recognised as being of regional interest and is part of the museum network of the Città metropolitana di Napoli.
A picture gallery in a building adjoining the basilica is linked to the museum; it was inaugurated in December 2016.
