About the museum
The shrine stands at the north-eastern end of the Montello, on the Colesel dele Zorle, at an altitude of about 200 metres, overlooking the stretch of the Piave where the Battle of the Solstice and the Battle of Vittorio Veneto were fought. It was designed by the Roman architect Felice Nori, completed in 1935 and inaugurated on 18 June 1938, on the twentieth anniversary of the Battle of the Solstice.
The square tower, massive and tapering upwards, has rationalist forms and encloses a cylindrical void with loggias and stairs leading to the upper floors; a pyramidal dome of glass and steel, completed in the 1980s, covers the interior. The monument holds the remains of around 9,000 soldiers, previously buried in numerous small cemeteries along the Piave front.
Inside, visitors reach a small votive chapel and the Museo dei soldati del Montello, established in 1992, which displays weapons, ammunition, memorabilia, maps, documents and photographs of the soldiers who fought on the Montello. From the loggias and balconies there are views over the battlefield and the course of the Piave; on the forecourt are artillery pieces of the period.
