About the museum
The museum was founded in the 1980s from a historical and environmental study carried out by students of the town's secondary schools, coordinated by a group of enthusiasts. With around seven hundred finds it documents the period between the 19th and 20th centuries, when Guardiagrele was predominantly a rural and craft community.
The visit introduces two aspects of life in the past: the patriarchal family, with its rules and rhythms, and the rural and craft community, with numerous trades that have now disappeared. The rooms reproduce the most characteristic domestic spaces: a kitchen with oven, fireplace, kneading troughs and copper pots, with an area for spinning and weaving equipped with a working loom, and a bedroom devoted to the customs linked to marriage and the dowry, with women's clothing and handmade jewellery.
Other spaces are devoted to the trades: cabinetmakers and carpenters, dyers, shoemakers, potters, chair-makers, coppersmiths and wrought-iron craftsmen. The museum is run by the Pro Loco “Porta della Majella” and is part of the Guardiagrele museum circuit.
