About the museum
The museum, named after Don Domenico Grossi, is set up in the three rooms of the medieval crypt of the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore and was established in 1988, after the crypt was restored. It holds the most important pieces from the cathedral that survived the earthquake of 1703, together with works from other churches in the town, dating from the 14th to the 18th century.
The first room is devoted to sacred vestments: liturgical brocade fabrics, statues of saints and 18th-century wooden reliquaries. The second room is devoted to Nicola da Guardiagrele and to goldsmith work from Guardiagrele, and houses the fragments of the silver processional cross, signed and dated 1431, partly recovered after the theft of 1979, and the sculptural group of the Coronation of the Virgin, which once stood in the lunette of the portal and was attributed to Nicola on the occasion of the 2008 exhibition. At the centre is the Madonna dell'Aiuto, a painted and gilded wooden statue of the 15th century, beside two illuminated 14th-century choir books.
The third room presents 14th-century works: a carved wooden casket, a painted wooden cross-reliquary, and monstrances and thuribles from the churches of the town.
