About the museum
The Scolacium archaeological park lies at Roccelletta di Borgia and preserves the remains of the Greek city of Skylletion, later refounded in Roman times as the colony Minervia Scolacium. Little remains of the pre-Roman settlement, while the visible structures show the layout of the Roman colony, with paved streets, aqueducts, mausoleums and other tombs, a basilica and a thermal complex.
The theatre, built in the 1st century on a natural slope, could hold about 5,000 spectators and was remodelled several times until the 4th century; much of the finds recovered in the excavations come from here, including architectural elements and sculptural groups. Nearby is the amphitheatre, dating to the time of Emperor Nerva and the only one discovered so far in Calabria.
The museum is located within the park and presents the excavation materials; the area also hosts a small section on 20th-century industrial archaeology. The complex is a state institution of the Ministry of Culture.
