About the museum
The Casa della Memoria was inaugurated on 18 March 2005 by Mimmo Rotella, the décollage artist born in Catanzaro in 1918. The project, curated by the architect Marcello Sestito, restored the house at Vico dell’Onda 1 where Rotella grew up: here his mother, Teresa Curcio, worked as a milliner and made hats for the ladies of the city. The artist linked this family setting to his mother’s influence on his use of colour and to his father Vincenzo’s encouragement to study.
The house museum is run by the Fondazione Mimmo Rotella. It holds family memories, documents and important works, including décollages and works made with the various techniques Rotella experimented with over his long career, as well as a specialised library on his work and on the history of contemporary art.
In 2018, on the occasion of the centenary of the master’s birth, the permanent display was renewed with exhibition elements designed for the intimate, bright rooms of the house. The new route highlights Rotella’s relationship with the cities where he lived and travelled, and his bond with his homeland: urban spaces were the stage of his research, which began right here in Catanzaro, within these walls.
