About the museum
Museo Emblema is the studio house that the painter Salvatore Emblema (born in Terzigno in 1929, died in 2006) built on the slopes of Vesuvius and opened to the public: the gate always stood open, and curious visitors and children came in to see the paintings and the garden. From this spontaneous hospitality the museum was born, conceived by the artist not as a monument to his own memory but as a place of thought, education and freedom.
The museum preserves and presents a selection of Emblema’s works, known for their use of transparency and light: canvases of frayed jute worked so that light passes through them. The works are shown on a six-monthly rotation. Alongside the exhibition rooms there is an archive dedicated to the artist, a restoration workshop and an educational department for schools, which uses art as a tool for learning other subjects too.
The institution was set up to spread contemporary art in the artist’s home town and continues to promote the languages of the present through educational activities, studies and publications, in particular the catalogue raisonné of his work.
