About the museum
The museum is housed in the historic building of the Vesuvius Observatory, regarded as the first volcanological observatory in the world, on the slope of Vesuvius in Ercolano. Today it is part of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). The permanent exhibition was provisionally reopened on 1 November 2022.
The route tells the story of the Observatory and of the great scientists who directed it, through rooms refurbished with the original furnishings. It displays collections of rocks and minerals, lava medals, books, paintings and important antique scientific instruments.
The itinerary shows how the methods for studying volcanoes evolved from the 17th century to the first half of the 20th century, and introduces the concepts of volcanic hazard and risk. Visits are free of charge, led by scientific staff and reserved for groups by booking.
