About the museum
Maso Spilzi is in Costa, about two and a half kilometres from Folgaria, on the Alpe Cimbra. The complex was built in the second half of the 18th century by the Spilzi family and combines the features of a residence and a fortified building, with the buildings arranged around an inner courtyard. In the large hayloft, now an exhibition space, the slots for the ropes of the drawbridge can still be seen.
Since 1985 the property has belonged to the Magnifica Comunità di Folgaria, which decided to set up an ethnographic museum there. Today the complex belongs to the Municipality of Folgaria and, after a period of renovation, has found a new life: the eastern wing houses the clubhouse of the 18-hole golf course, opened in 2014, and a bar-restaurant, while the western wing, in the old hayloft, hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures and concerts.
From the south entrance you reach the permanent exhibitions. One is devoted to mountain life and the traditional crafts of the Alpe Cimbra, with themed rooms on haymaking, viticulture, cheese-making, mills and activities such as timber felling, stone working and mining; about 800 objects were donated by local families. The other tells the story of skiing and snow.
