About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Veneziano in Malborghetto, about 12 km from Tarvisio, an elegant 17th-century building that is one of the most interesting in the Val Canale for its history and architecture. The palace is today home to the ethnographic museum of the Comunità di montagna del Canal del Ferro e Val Canale (mountain community).
The display is organised in sections on the ethnographic aspects of the Val Canale and also includes a part on geology and prehistory. Ample space is given to the local economy, in particular the mining activities of the Raibl mine and the typical enterprises of the area between the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The most recent pavilion is dedicated to the traditions and rites of the Christmas and Easter religious festivals, including the famous krampus. Specific sections also tell the story of the Tarvisio Forest and of the Palazzo Veneziano itself. The museum has a photo library and a documentary archive.
