About the museum
The museum has been open since 1990 in the former primary school of Cave del Predil, a hamlet of Tarvisio. It presents a route through the military history of a border territory, from the barbarian invasions to the Second World War, in six rooms and with extensive archive documentation, some of it from different nations.
The route is divided into three periods: the Napoleonic campaigns waged by the Army of Italy against the Habsburgs, the First World War as an operational theatre on the front (1915–1918), and the Second World War, when the area was a starting point and the subject of international dispute. The collections on the First World War describe the front both from the point of view of the Italian army and from that of the Austro-Hungarian army.
The “Vittorio Veneto” room is dedicated to the First World War, with a focus on the front of the Zona Carnica, while the “Duca d'Aosta” room documents the period from the transfer of the Tarvisiano area to Italy in 1919 to the Second World War. Since 2021 the museums of Cave del Predil have been run by a cooperative on behalf of the Comune di Tarvisio.
