About the museum
The Speleovivarium is a museum and biospeleology laboratory in Trieste, opened to the public in January 1990 and run by the Società Adriatica di Speleologia. It is recognised as a museum by the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and is named after the speleologist Erwin Pichl.
The museum shows how caves form, which organisms live in them and how speleology developed, with particular attention to the exploration of the underground of the Trieste Karst. Among the rarest animals presented to visitors is the olm, a blind amphibian of underground waters.
The Speleovivarium collaborates with the Natural History Museum of Trieste and with the Tular cave laboratory in Kranj, Slovenia, and carries out outreach and educational activities for schools.
