About the museum
The museum commemorates Carlo Siemoni, a forestry engineer of Bohemian origin whom Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany called in 1837 to manage the forests of Casentino. Siemoni lived and worked in Pratovecchio, where he died in 1878, and his name is linked to the revival of woodlands that had been neglected.
The exhibition presents a collection of dried and framed Italian forest species, with their distribution maps, trunk sections, wood samples and wood damaged by insects or parasites. Other material illustrates the state forests and the Sasso Fratino integral nature reserve, with photographs, a geological model, rocks and soil profiles. There are also collections of Apennine insects and trophies of ungulates found dead in the forest.
Next to the museum extends the arboretum, presented as the oldest in Italy, with 139 tree species on about three hectares, including giant sequoias, Spanish firs and Japanese cedars.
