About the museum
Moggiona, a small mountain village within the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, was for a long time a centre of bigonai, craftsmen who built the bigoni, the large wooden vessels used to carry grapes during the grape harvest. To preserve the memory of this trade, the Pro Loco set up the Bottega del Bigonaio, part of the network of the Ecomuseo del Casentino.
The route has two sections: the first reconstructs a traditional workshop with tools and working environment, the second displays the products made by the craftsmen. Demonstrations of the craft by the village’s craftsmen are possible on request.
Not far away is the permanent exhibition on the War and the Resistance in the Casentino, set up to commemorate the Nazi-Fascist massacre of 7 September 1944, in which eighteen people were killed, and the other wartime events that struck the village, which lies on the Gothic Line. The exhibition presents military material, original documents, panels and drawings, and has a small library.
