About the museum

The “Carlo Venturini” Cultural Centre was created from a project to restore and reorganise the museum spaces, promoted by the Municipality of Massa Lombarda. It is housed in the restored Liberty-style building known as “Pueris Sacrum” and brings together, seamlessly, the library, the Museo civico Venturini and the municipal picture gallery (Pinacoteca comunale), on viale Zaganelli.

The museum holds the collection left to the city by Carlo Venturini (1809-1886), a physician, collector and honorary diplomat born in Massa Lombarda, a model example of nineteenth-century antiquarian collecting. After his death, books and objects were bequeathed to the city. The core consists of ancient material, above all Greek, Magna Graecia and Etruscan ceramics: there are buccheri, Corinthian and Etrusco-Corinthian vases and a red-figure hydria attributed to the workshop of Assteas and Python (4th century BC). There are also bronzes, Punic stelae from the Tophet of Carthage, majolica from Abruzzo and Faenza of the 17th and 18th centuries, glass, Roman and 19th-century coins, and a natural history collection of fossils, shells and minerals displayed in their original containers.

The picture gallery traces the local artistic culture from the 16th to the 18th century, with Venturini’s collection of 19th-century paintings, works by Giambattista Bassi and Angelo Torchi, and pieces by Orfeo Orfei and the Folli family.
