About the museum
The civic museum of Garessio was founded in 1970 to display archaeological and geological finds, partly from the Val Tanaro area and partly from distant places. It is housed in the Sala degli Affreschi of the Palazzo Comunale, in Piazza Carrara.
The archaeological section illustrates production techniques from prehistory to late antiquity, with objects in stone, ceramic, glass and iron: from Palaeolithic and Neolithic stone working to Neolithic pottery and Roman tableware. Among the materials are finds from the excavations at the Arma del Graj and from discoveries across the Garessio area. The geo-speleological section offers an introduction to minerals, arranged by mineral class, and insights into the local geology, cave calcite formations and fossilisation; there are also fossils and the complete skeleton of a cave bear.
On the first floor of the town hall is the Pinacoteca civica, which holds about 150 works, including those of the brothers Giovanni Colmo, a landscape painter, and Eugenio Colmo, known as Golia (1885–1967), a draughtsman, caricaturist and watercolourist who lived in Garessio for many years. Two permanent rooms are dedicated to them.
