About the museum

The museum is dedicated to Giancarlo Vitali (1929–2018), a painter and printmaker born in Bellano. It opened to the public on 30 April 2025 as a study centre and permanent exhibition space, within the BAC Bellano Arte Cultura project, which promotes the historic centre through exhibitions, series and itineraries.

The collection comes from the donation of the Vitali family to the Comune di Bellano and to the Associazione ArchiViVitali ETS, which runs the project with the support of private donors, Fondazione Cariplo and the Comune. It comprises about 100 works created between the mid-1940s and the 1980s, and the artist’s entire printmaking output, about 560 sheets.

The venue is Palazzo Lorla, a noble palace of ancient origin with an 18th-century appearance, where Agostino Lorla, the last member of a family of textile manufacturers, lived at the end of the 19th century. The restoration was completed in 2018; the interiors were rethought with flexible and reversible solutions, such as movable walls. The works are arranged on the ground floor by affinity rather than in chronological order, among portraits, still lifes, animals and scenes of everyday life in Bellano, up to the garden with the mural by Velasco Vitali.
