About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the memory of Giulia Colbert Falletti di Barolo, marchioness and social reformer of nineteenth-century Turin. It is housed in the Istituto Santa Maria Maddalena, the mother house of the Suore Figlie di Gesù Buon Pastore (Daughters of Jesus the Good Shepherd), a congregation the marchioness founded in 1833 to support the rehabilitation of women prisoners and marginalised women.
In the Turin district of Valdocco, Giulia di Barolo had the monastery built and gave rise to several educational and welfare institutions, among them the Rifugio, the first nucleus of the Institute, where girls in difficult circumstances, known as the “Maddalenine”, were educated.
The museum displays objects, images, writings and photographs that illustrate the marchioness's activity and allow visitors to trace her life, the people she knew and the events of Turin between the late eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century.
