Special exhibition
A route through more than forty Chinese carpets from the imperial period and as many pieces from Xinjiang, showing how designs and colours change as one approaches central China.
The MITA was founded at the wish of the Fondazione Tassara as a centre devoted to textile artefacts of universal value, in the Don Bosco district of Brescia, a few steps from the railway station. The museum opened in October 2023 and hosts exhibitions, meetings, lectures and performances.
The heart of the museum is the Zaleski Collection, assembled by Romain Zaleski over more than fifty years and still growing. It comprises more than 1,300 carpets dating from the late fifteenth to the early twentieth century. The seven major production areas represented are Europe and North Africa, Persia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, India, China and Japan, with examples ranging from large palace or mosque carpets to small prayer rugs.
The MITA is also active in research, restoration, cataloguing and scientific collaborations, and offers a virtual museum online that allows the collection to be explored along personalised routes. The collection has been shown in various exhibitions and is frequently lent to international shows.
