About the museum
The museum grew out of the activity of the Cinefotoclub Brescia, an association of amateur photographers founded in 1953, whose first donation was a group of seven cameras. The idea of a public museum took shape in the 1980s, starting from the material collected by the club.
The exhibition space is in vicolo San Faustino, in the centre of Brescia, while a room for exhibitions and lectures is housed in contrada del Carmine, next to the church of the same name. Admission is free for individuals and groups.
The permanent display includes more than eight thousand pieces, among them photographic and film cameras and filming and darkroom equipment. The route presents amateur cinema, with equipment also used by NASA; the history of photography from the camera obscura to the first daguerreotypes and autochromes; cameras arranged by manufacturer, such as Leica, Zeiss Ikon and Kodak; and photographic technique. A collection of about 150 daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and ferrotypes made between 1839 and the late 19th century is presented as the only such collection open to the public in Italy. The museum also has an archive of about 60,000 photographs and a library of about 8,000 volumes on photography and cinema.
