About the museum
The museum La Torre e il Fiume opened on 7 July 2013, at the end of the fitting-out works carried out with the contribution of the Piedmont Region. Its heart is the ancient medieval tower of Masio, about 27 metres high and recognised as a national monument, which is part of a wider dispersed museum across the municipal territory devoted to history, culture, environment, art and tourism along the Tanaro.
The route follows the vertical development of the tower: over seven floors, images and reproductions of ancient documents tell the story of the territory of Masio in ancient times, the building and defence of a tower, the sieges and the demolition, up to the point at which the building, having lost its strategic function, becomes part of the landscape dominated by the river. Hence the name of the museum, which links the two characteristic elements of the place.
At the top, visitors find a wide panorama over the Tanaro, the plain and the hills of the Monferrato. A nature trail also leads from the tower, running along the river and climbing through woods and vineyards.
