About the museum
The MAAC, Museo Archeologico e di Arte Contemporanea, is a museum and cultural space in Ceglie Messapica, in the province of Brindisi, which also hosts meetings and events, including appointments in the poetry garden named after Rita Santoro Mastantuono.
The town’s archaeological museum, described by earlier sources as based in the Castello Ducale, arose from a 1998 exhibition entitled “Messapica Ceglie”, the first to present the Messapian finds of the area. The collections contain material from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, largely from funerary contexts.
Among the most significant finds mentioned by sources are the trozzella, the vessel considered the most representative of Messapian civilisation, and a deposit of polished axes found in the Contrada Sardella, one of the rare European examples of this type of find.
