About the museum
The Museo della Ceramica di Grottaglie is regarded as the main museum in Apulia devoted to the art of ceramics, and documents its link with the ancient craft tradition of this town on the Ionian coast. It is housed in the south-eastern wing of the Castello Episcopio, which for centuries was the symbol of the feudal power of the bishops of Taranto and their residence; the museum occupies rooms that were once stables.
The collection includes about four hundred objects, dating from the 8th century BC to the contemporary era, and is divided into five sections: traditional ceramics for everyday use, majolica (plates, jugs and devotional objects), archaeological finds from the 8th to the 4th century BC, nativity scenes and contemporary ceramics.
The castle stands in the historic centre, near the ceramics quarter, and the museum offers educational activities and guided tours.
