About the museum
The monastery of Santa Chiara in Camerino dates from 1384, when it was founded by Giovanni da Varano; in 1483 it passed to the Poor Clare nuns, among them the daughter of the lord of Camerino, Camilla Battista da Varano, a mystic and abbess who was canonised in 2010. Over the centuries the complex suffered earthquakes, epidemics and requisitions, until the Poor Clares regained possession of it in 1896.
After the damage of the 2016 earthquake the community lives in a modern, earthquake-resistant building in via Medici. The monastery welcomes pilgrims who wish to learn about the life and works of Saint Camilla Battista Varano, whose remains are kept in the crypt of the church.
A museum is attached to the monastery. According to the Camerino municipality’s entry, it preserves, among other things, an autograph of the pope and the pen used to sign a decree.
