About the museum
The museum opened on 22 October 1992 thanks to the Fondazione Discepolo, established in January of that year by the Discepolo family and the municipality of Vico Equense. The original core is the mineral collection assembled by the engineer Pasquale Discepolo over more than fifty years of research.
Over time new sections were added: palaeontology in 1997, with Permian reptiles, dinosaur eggs and the diorama of the baby dinosaur “Ciro”; gemmology in 2001, with over 500 hard stones; anthropology in 2003, with stone tools from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic; malacology in 2014, with about a thousand shells; and finally, in 2015, the graphene samples donated by the Nobel laureate Andre Geim.
In April 2011 the museum moved to the first floor of the former seventeenth-century convent of the Santissima Trinità e del Paradiso. About 3,500 of the more than 5,000 minerals in the collection are on display, arranged by crystal-chemical classes, with specimens from Vesuvius and Somma, fluorescent minerals and meteorites.
