About the museum
The museum is housed in Cà ad Martolo, the home of a family of miner-farmers, largely preserved in its original condition and furnished with period objects. Among them stands out a 1907 calendar on which the cows' breeding and milk sales were noted: work in the mine and work in the fields were closely intertwined, as the tools of both activities show.
The display is divided into five sections devoted to the place (maps and photographs), the people (photographs), history (documents), minerals and work tools from different periods; on the ground floor, the entrance to a mine has been reconstructed. The house is run by the Gruppo per la Ricerca Storico Scientifica sulle Miniere di Brosso (GRSS) and is part of the Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea museum network.
The valley of the Assa stream preserves traces of a long mining and metallurgical history. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century haematite was mined here and worked with the method known as “bassofuoco alla brossese”; later pyrite, once discarded, was used to produce vitriol and, from the mid-19th century, sulphuric acid for the Turin plants of the Sclopis family, owners of the mines. A visit can be combined with a walk to the metallurgical sites along the left bank of the Assa.
