About the museum

The Ecomuseo della Castagna di Nomaglio tells the story of the bond between the community and the chestnut tree, a fundamental resource of the mountain economy. The heart of the museum is an ancient water-powered mill, still working, where chestnuts are ground into the flour used to make food products.

The ecomuseum is completed by a signposted outdoor route which starts from the central square of the village and climbs to the fruit-bearing chestnut groves. Along the way you pass centuries-old chestnut trees, the old small huts where leaves were stored, the ricciaie (where empty chestnut burrs were disposed of) and the open-air drying kilns (essiccatoi in campo), where fresh chestnuts were turned into dried produce. The ecomuseum also offers educational workshops for schools.
