About the museum

The museum was opened in 1972 by Edy Romani, a self-taught collector, with the support of the members of the Gruppo Mineralogico e Naturalistico dell'Alta Valtellina. It is located at Rovinaccia, in the woods above Bormio, near the Rezia botanic garden, and over time has grown from a few display niches into large rooms.

The collection includes minerals and crystals from the Valtellina and from other places around the world, notably in the crystal room devoted to Alpine minerals and in a display case on non-Alpine minerals. Among the specimens shown are native gold with pyrrhotite and dravite, found during the works after the Val Pola landslide of 1987, calcite from Bormio, anatase from the Grisons, and lollingite with arsenopyrite from the Valposchiavo.

The diorama room shows Alpine wildlife through the seasons, with animals such as the eagle, the chamois and the capercaillie. The complex also includes a hall for conferences, screenings and exhibitions with a bar service, an art workshop for cutting hard stones with a sales point, and a garden with ponds and local vegetation.
