About the museum
The MUSMIR is housed in the Castello Carafa of Roccella Jonica, in the restored rooms of the palace’s south-west wing, on the ground floor and first floor. The castle stands on a rock overlooking the sea and was probably built by the Swabians in the 13th century; in the 18th century the Carafa family enlarged it and turned it into a noble residence.
The museum was presented and opened to the public on 15 July 2023. The display was partly funded by a €2 million grant awarded to the municipality by the Region and the Ministry of Culture. Its scientific supervision is by Anna Villari, and the films feature voices including Luca Ward as narrator and Ninni Bruschetta as Prince Vincenzo Maria Carafa.
It is a museum of storytelling rather than of objects: fifteen installations, including wall projections, 3D reconstructions, virtual reality viewers, touch tables and teaching rooms, accompanied by traditional panels. The route has two themes: a chronological one, from prehistory through Greek colonisation and the Roman age to the 20th century, with a focus on the jazz festival “Rumori Mediterranei”; and another devoted to the Carafa della Spina family, in the wing that housed their apartments.
