About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Corvo, in the centre of Ortona, and is run by the Istituto Nazionale Tostiano, a cultural institution founded in 1983 to study and promote the figure of the composer Francesco Paolo Tosti and the music of Abruzzo. The museum was inaugurated on 9 April 1994 by the soprano Renata Tebaldi and was the first in Abruzzo to be entirely dedicated to music.

The two Tosti rooms trace the musician’s life concisely with documents and photographic panels, and recreate the 19th-century drawing room in which Tosti composed and performed his songs. The room is inspired by his London home in Mortimer Street and contains furniture, objects and paintings that belonged to the maestro.

The Sala di Musica holds documents and relics of the baritone Giuseppe De Luca, one of the great performers at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and hosts concerts, seminars and meetings. The Institute also holds the archive and music library, a collection of images and a collection of European and non-European instruments.
