About the museum

The museum is housed in the Castello Ducale in Crecchio, a building that was rebuilt in the 1960s after the bombing of 1943 and that housed the town hall in the 1980s before making way for the museum. It displays objects recovered between 1988 and 1991 by the Archeoclub d'Italia, in collaboration with the Soprintendenza archeologica d'Abruzzo, from a Roman-Byzantine villa at Vassarella: bowls, oil lamps, amphorae, the pottery known as “tipo Crecchio”, bronze vessels and precious wooden finds.

The finds from the villa testify to a dense network of trade between Byzantine Abruzzo and the East, in particular Coptic Egypt, and have made it possible to reconstruct the history of Frentanian Abruzzo under Byzantine rule between the 6th and 7th centuries. A dedicated section, opened in 2007, is devoted to the wooden finds recovered from the villa's cistern.

The display is enriched with finds from other places on the Abruzzo coast, such as the tabula patronatus of 383 AD found at San Salvo, and an Ostrogothic helmet from the period of the Greco-Gothic War. The Sala Alberto Carlo Fraracci presents an Etruscan collection donated to the Archeoclub of Crecchio in 1995.
