About the museum
The Museo Napoleonico “G.A. Antonelli” was founded in 1984 and, with original objects and period prints, tells the story of the Napoleonic epic and the main moments in the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The collection and related activities are recognised locally as being of inter-municipal interest.
The museum is based in Arcole because Napoleon won an important battle here. An Italian unit also took part in the clash: the mounted chasseurs (cacciatori a cavallo) of the Lombard Legion, whose vertical green, white and red banner later became the Italian national flag. Near the bridge over the Alpone stands the obelisk Napoleon had erected to commemorate the victory, the only surviving monument among those he commissioned in Italy; the museum also holds documentation about it.
The collection includes paintings, prints, copper and steel engravings, lithographs and aquatints, posters and proclamations, bulletins of the Grande Armée and period documents. The museum attracts school groups and enthusiasts of modern history and is run with the help of volunteers.
