About the museum
The sanctuary stands on the site of the small church of San Pietro in Lamentese, documented around the 10th century. In 1486 a Marian image painted on the outer wall was defaced and, according to tradition, blood flowed from it. The episode gave rise to a great cult, and the Olivetan monks built a monastery beside the site of the miracle. The monastery was suppressed by the Republic of Venice in 1771; religious services resumed in 1827, and the church became a parish in 1955.
The church has a single nave designed in the 16th century by Lorenzo da Bologna, with a high altar in polychrome marbles and an altarpiece of the Assumption by Francesco Montemezzano. The chapel housing the miraculous image is the original building; in front of it, the Marquis Francesco II Gonzaga had a chapel built between 1493 and 1495, of which a large triumphal arch in Vicenza stone survives.
In the old sacristy beside the chapel, the ex-voto museum has been on display since 1997, after restoration work supervised by the heritage protection bodies. The collection comprises 353 pieces, mostly painted tablets donated by the faithful between 1486 and 1893, as well as two small canvases of 1617, jewellery and silver or embroidered hearts offered to thank the Madonna for cures and narrow escapes. It is considered one of the largest collections of ex-votos in Italy.
