About the museum
The Museo nazionale della Preistoria della Valle Camonica, known as MUPRE, is located in Capo di Ponte, in the territory of the Camunian rock engravings inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It occupies Villa Agostani, a historic building housing a route over three floors devoted to the life of the alpine communities of the valley, from prehistory to the Iron Age, when the Camuni established themselves.
On the ground floor, in finely vaulted rooms and under a long portico on the façade, are displayed the decorated stelae and menhir-boulders from the megalithic sanctuaries of the Copper Age (4th–3rd millennium BC), discovered in recent years at Cemmo, Bagnolo and Ossimo (sites Anvoia and Pat). Some examples, such as the Cemmo 9 and Pat 4 stelae, are of imposing size.
On the second floor, in a large hall, the sections on material culture begin with the first settlement of the valley in the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic, with the Upper Palaeolithic hut more than 13,000 years old discovered at Cividate Camuno and seasonal high-altitude camps. They are followed by the Neolithic transition and the transformation of the environment, and by a section on settlements, such as the Coren Pagà di Rogno, Luine di Darfo, the Castello di Breno and the Dos de l’Arca di Capo di Ponte.
